My friends have one of these that I've used and it is very nice, but I could not handle the price (a year or more ago). After some searching, I found the Hitachi RZST10Y fuzzy rice cooker and ordered it at $89. They have only 1 US reseller so far as I can tell. It has been great. The same "fire-and-forget" function. Now that Zojirushi prices aren't quite so inflated, I would consider them next time. But hmmm., I did not know until I stopped here that the "Z" models will need to have their internal battery surgically replaced in future. I need to see if the Hitachi has a user-replaceable battery. That was something I was not aware of with these and not sending it back to NYC in 3 years would be a plus :)
UPDATE: Just out of curiousity, I emailed the place that sold me the Hitachi RZST10Y and asked about batteries. He was quick to reply and definite in his answer. The Hitachi does not employ a battery but uses a capacitor instead. It need only be plugged in once a year to retain its settings -- and no trip in future to get a battery replaced.
